We just got our client a link from Forbes…

If you’re at all familiar with SEO, you’ll know how awesome that is.

And if you’re familiar with PR, you’ll know how hard that is.

Forbes is a high domain authority site, with tons of credibility. Their standards for inclusion are extremely high.

But if there’s anything that search engines and AI engines love, it’s authority and credibility. So for an SEO agency, it’s a real win.

You’ve probably heard that if you want to improve your SEO, you need to create more content for your website.

And that’s true, but there’s another aspect to SEO that’s so often overlooked.

And that’s gaining external authority.

More than anything, search engines want to know you’re credible, relevant, and an authority. They want to be sure they’re presenting the most credible and relevant answers to searchers’ queries.

And while some of the way they look for that is by looking at the content on your website, the other way they calculate your relevance is by looking at how other websites and people speak about you online.

This is what we call social proof.

A lot like humans, they understand this from:

Your customer reviews (like Google Reviews and Yelp)
Your qualifications and certifications.
Any awards you’ve received.
Press attention you’ve received.
How long you’ve been in business.
Places you’ve been mentioned elsewhere on the internet.
How credible they consider those sources to be.

There was a time when volume of links was the most important factor in gaining online authority, and a lot of people were able to game the search rankings that way.

These days, that’s a really fast way to get your site penalized or damage your authority, which in turn harms visibility.

But when you’re able to secure links from interactions with journalists and business owners that are genuine and authentic, that’s when you start to gain a real edge.

So that’s why getting a link from Forbes can be such a big deal for small businesses, especially ones that are working to become more visible online.

If you need help with your visibility, my team and I would love to help. Drop us a line any time.

The ultimate compliment: A good friend told me recently they found SEO boring, and couldn’t believe I’d actually made it sound interesting...

I pride myself on being a storyteller first, and an SEO expert second, so this made me happy.

So if this sounds anything like you, here are some details on a short, FREE workshop I’ve put together on how to set up and optimize your Google My Business profile.

Here are the details:

Make your SEO sparkle
Tuesday 18 August
2-2.45pm EST
On zoom

AI search is changing how people find businesses, and your Google Business Profile is an important and powerful tool businesses can leverage to build visibility.

I’ll step you through how to create your GMB profile, how to optimize it, and why it’s important for your business.

I get it. SEO can be dry. But only if you implement it in a dry, bland kind of way.

SEO is a tool we have to amplify visibility: it should never stifle a brand.

If you’d like to attend and learn how powerful this can be for you too, let me know in the comments below and I’ll share with you the link to join the workshop.

never planned to start an SEO agency, but it’s the move that changed everything…

Don’t get me wrong. Starting an agency gets you some applause. But I put a twist on it that even I didn’t see coming...

(BTW SEO stands for search engine optimization. We help people get found in search.)

SEO gets a really bad rep.

There are lots of people who offer it who don’t really understand it at all.

The industry has a reputation for being unreliable, opaque, untrustworthy, and full of scammers.

I wanted NOTHING to do with that. So I resisted starting an agency for a long time.

I come from an academic background. I’ve been a writer and editor at some of the world’s most prestigious publishers, and I've worked on projects with some of the biggest technology companies in the world. High quality work is in my blood, and integrity is extremely important to me.

I knew I understood SEO on a deeper level, and with more nuance than 99% of people out there.

Even so, I was afraid I would damage my reputation, or that people would think less of me.

So I pushed back. I looked for any way I could to avoid focusing on SEO, even when it made my life harder.

Eventually, though, so many people kept asking me for help that I started to feel genuinely useful.

Gradually, I realized I could do SEO in a way that was helpful, and that actually made people’s lives better.

As I started to see my clients’ lives change as a result of the work we were doing together, I realized I almost had a responsibility to share that knowledge and expertise. I could do SEO in a way that other people didn’t.

With clarity, transparency, and by taking the time to educate and empower people to better understand SEO as we go.

And THAT was the game-changer.

There was no fanfare about that part of the process. I did it instinctively from the very start. It all went quietly under the radar. But it worked.

Nearly four years in now, Aloha Life Digital is thriving thanks to that decision, and I’d make it a thousand times again.

So if you’re looking for help with SEO, or visibility in AI search at any time, We’d love to help. Drop us a DM and we can take it from there.

In my grand plan, this wasn’t supposed to happen for several years...

My 3-year-old boutique SEO agency was just shortlisted as a finalist for Best SEO Agency at the US Agency Awards.

I’m staggered. These are nationwide awards, and we’re up against five agencies that are far more established than Aloha Life Digital, with teams many times our size.

For someone who resisted starting an agency and never had this goal in mind, this blows my mind.

If it goes no further than this, I’m already delighted.

But I’m also not ashamed of wanting to win.

The credibility it would bring to my agency, the confidence it would bring to my clients, and the pride it would bring to my team. I want those things.

So there’s a spark of hope that wonders whether we might just be in with a chance, even up against comparative giants.

Especially because my agency is different from many others, and I’m hoping that’s what the panel has picked up on.

You see, so many SEO agencies have poor reputations. That’s one reason I resisted starting one for so long. I didn’t want people to think less of me, my work, or the value it brings.

But when I realised I could build an agency around values that mattered deeply to me, I realised I could create something special.

Aloha Life Digital is built on kindness, empathy, and meaningful relationships with our clients.

We go out of our way to help people understand search and AI search, and empower them to use ethical SEO practices.

We weave kindness into every interaction, with clients, between team members, and through the way we help website visitors find useful answers.

We strive to be genuinely helpful to real human beings.

Of course, we get great results for clients, but any agency shortlisted as a finalist will have that. It’s a given.

So I’m wondering whether the uniqueness of our approach is what the judges have seen, and why we’ve been compared alongside agencies with far greater resources than we have.

Why not? We got this far.

Why not us?

Why not me?

We’ll just have to wait and see.

In the meantime, please wish us luck!

Claire.

I didn’t set out to specifically work with high end businesses: it just happened really organically.

But this has become our niche and speciality as an agency.

Now what do I mean by ‘high end’? It’s a pretty vague term.

I mean businesses that are at the top of their game. They have a premium offering within their industry or sector.

They are not the cheapest option out there, and they often don’t compete on price.

But very often they provide the very best offering available within their sector.

This isn’t specific to one industry. We have clients in many different sectors, offering wildly different services.

But these businesses tend to have a few things in common.

• They have honed and refined their offer, often through years of experience and experimentation.
• They have a clear and compelling offer for their clients.
• They have straightforward pricing that’s easy to understand.
• They place a high value on customer service.
• They offer something more than the standard offering within their niche.
• They are exceptional at what they do.
And when they get leads, they’re able to close them.

I’ve met so many businesses who already have all of these pieces in place. They know they have an amazing offering, and they’re great at what they do, but they are still struggling to get found by the people who need their products or services.

And this is where my team and I really come into our own.

Because these business owners already have the fundamentals of a good business in place, it makes our job so much easier to produce results.

When businesses aren’t clear on their offering, or haven’t nailed product market fit yet, it can be difficult to see how effective marketing efforts are.

So these are the qualities I look for when researching potential clients, or when someone asks us to perform an SEO audit.

I like to think that my team and I have gravitated towards working with high end businesses because we share similar values.

Aloha Life Digital is also a high end business. All the principles I’ve outlined are ones that we strive to achieve for ourselves.

So if you’re a high end business owner, I’d love to hear from you.

Almost everyone I speak to about SEO these days also asks me how to get found in AI search.

And AI search is evolving very fast.

However, a couple of things to remember before we consider AI search results:

Within the US:
Google still accounts for 84-88% of all internet searches. It’s a slight decline since this time last year.
AI search tools account for roughly 12 to 20% of ‘search-like’ activity. ChatGPT accounts for 73% of that chunk.

On top of this, we need to make a distinction between two different types of searches, which have an outsize impact on which tools people use to find businesses.

High intent search is where there is commercial intent. Someone is ready to purchase; they’re looking to spend money to solve a problem.

Low intent search, or informational search, is where someone is just researching. They may eventually become a high intent searcher, but most of the time they don’t.

And search engines treat these different types of query very differently.

Low intent search, or informational search, is very often replaced by AI overviews. So if you’re looking to answer a question, the answer is presented before you even need to visit a website. It’s great for the user; quick to get information, not so great for website owners who need traffic to survive.

However, Google and (most) search engines are products of capitalism, and they all need money from business, in one form or another, to continue to grow and do business. So they are typically very business friendly.

So you’ll notice that with high intent searches, Google doesn’t give you an AI overview: you still get the list of hyperlinks and links to different businesses.

This doesn’t meant that low-intent searches are not still important for SEO; they are. But we can’t bank on them to drive meaningful or consistent traffic to our site.

However, it’s still important because it still reinforces your authority and credibility as a business.

As a business owner, the key takeaway is this: focus your SEO efforts on high intent searches, that is where the money is.

Have you done our SEO quiz yet?
It’s been a while since I mentioned this, and it’s just quietly hanging out there on our website.
If you’ve been wondering what your website’s SEO performance is like, or if there are specific areas where you should think about improving your SEO efforts, it’s a really great place to start.
Think of it like a mini SEO audit – of course it’s high level, but it gives you a clear indicator of where to start working, and where you might best be able to apply effort.
So there’s no time like the present! So if you have a spare 5 minutes, hop on over to our website and take a look.
