Things that hurt SEO

OK, hands up if you know which of these things could be killing your website’s SEO:

😫 You have fewer than 10 pages on your site.

😫 The last time you updated your site was two months ago.

😫 You aren’t using a different H1 tags, metatitles and metadescriptions on every page of your website.

🫣 Your site is hard to use on mobile.

Answer: all of them. (You probably guessed that.)

Now hands up if you've ever made any of these mistakes with your website! (I'll go first.)

🙋‍♀️Yup 🙋‍♀️Yup 🙋‍♀️Yup 🙋‍♀️Yup. (And lots more yups.)

Yep, I've made all these mistakes at one point or another, and that's how I know how impactful they are (trust me, they HURT your site). I’ve been building websites for over 20 years, so thankfully most of these I learnt from and stopped doing them a long time ago.

And here’s what you can do to solve these problems and get your website ranking in Google (and subsequently, attract more clients):

PUBLISH MORE CONTENT

Having very little content doesn’t give search engines much to go on. They don’t have a lot of information to understand your site, and consequently many keywords to rank your content for. If you only have a handful of pages, this also limits the opportunity for internal linking, which is crucial for SEO as it helps guide users through your site.

UPDATE YOUR SITE CONSISTENTLY

Even if it’s only once a month, make sure you’re regularly updating your content. Search engines favor fresh content, as it is considered more relevant and up-to-date for end users. Having regular updates to your site also signals to search engines that your site (and therefore business) is active, which can boost rankings.

ADD AN H1 TAG, METATITLE AND METADESCRIPTION TO EVERY PAGE

H1 tags, metatitles and metadescriptions are some of the main ways search engines use to understand the main topic of a page. Without an H1 tag, even if the content of your page is authoritative, and credible, search engines can struggle to accurately understand what is on each page, and therefore are less likely to rank your page high in search, preferring other pages that are more clearly signposted. Similarly, metadescriptions can help an end user understand what they will read on your page, and can provide an incentive to click on your search result over someone else’s.

MAKE SURE YOUR SITE APPEARS CLEARLY ON MOBILE

At least 60% of search traffic these days comes from mobile. So even if your site does appear in search, if it doesn’t then render well on mobile, you may well be losing out on over half your potential traffic. And that’s a huge missed opportunity.

Most website builders are designed for desktop first, and mobile second, so it’s easy to fall into the trap of neglecting the mobile version of your site.

So, at the end of designing every page for desktop, make sure you set aside dedicated time for reviewing the same content on mobile, and making any necessary changes to ensure it appears clearly – and quickly – on mobile too.
