Wix SEO vs WordPress SEO

Wix SEO vs Wordpress SEO

‘Can you really get Wix websites to rank?’

‘Is Wix any good for SEO?’

I can’t count the number of times I’ve been asked questions like these.

Even from other business owners.

Most recently, I met with Alethea Copelas, who is a true Wix website design expert, and founder of Inspired Website Design.

I asked Alethea why she considers Wix to be such a good platform for business owners, and this is what she had to say:

‘Choosing Wix for your small business website means less stress and more time to focus on growing your business. With its user-friendly features, mobile-responsive design, robust security, SEO tools, and scalability options, Wix has been the platform of choice for over 5 years for my clients:

  1. Easy to use: Wix is incredibly intuitive. You don’t need to be a tech expert to update your site. This means you can make changes without worrying about messing things up!
  2. Looks great on all devices: With more than half of all website traffic coming from mobile devices, it’s crucial that your site is optimized for people browsing on their phones. Wix ensures a smooth and engaging experience for all your visitors, no matter how they access your site.
  3. No technical worries: Wix takes care of hosting and security updates, freeing up your time and energy to focus on growing your business rather than troubleshooting technical issues.
  4. Ready to grow with you: As your business grows, your website can too. Wix makes it easy to add new features, whether you’re starting an online store, offering classes, or hosting events. There are tons of apps and custom coding options to keep up with your needs.’

And I agree with all of this.

However, I also want to take a moment to set the record straight a little bit about Wix as an SEO platform.

Some facts about Wix as an SEO platform

When Wix was first launched, and for quite a long time afterwards, it was quite hard to implement good SEO on the platform, because it lacked some fairly basic things like the ability to customize a URL, or add metatitles or metadescriptions. Those three things alone contribute massively to SEO on-page visibility.

And as a result, for quite a while, Wix was a poor platform for SEO.

However, a lot has changed, and nowadays this simply isn’t the case.

Some thoughts on WordPress as a website platform

I know a lot of SEOs are snooty about any platform that isn’t WordPress. A lot of agencies simply won’t work with websites that aren’t built in WordPress. And I get it: sometimes it makes sense from a business systems perspective.

But I personally don’t like WordPress. I think it’s high maintenance, fiddly, and hard for a lot of small business owners to manage.

WordPress – the pampered poodle of website platforms (IMHO).
WordPress – the pampered poodle of website platforms (IMHO).

Yes, I’ve built my own websites in WordPress in the past. And yes, WordPress is hugely customizable. But not all businesses need all that powerful customization. And a platform like Wix is a lot easier to handle.

So here are some facts:

  • There are no SEO penalties for using Wix

  • If you know how to implement good on-page SEO, you will be able to do this regardless of platform.

  • Wix has all the functionality needed to get websites ranking in 1st place on Google for your chosen term, regardless of what platform your competitors are running their websites on.

  • Most of the time, the thing that holds people back with SEO is their ability to implement it effectively, not the platform they’re building in.

Here are some real life examples

I have clients for whom I have run very successful SEO campaigns on Wix. Here are some examples:

  • 1st place for several high competition keywords in New England.

  • 2nd place in high intent, high competition search results for the whole of Hawaii.

  • Top 10 (and still climbing!) for the whole of California.

So the myth that Wix isn’t good for SEO is just that: a myth. And I hope that it will give small business owners the confidence to use and trust platforms like Wix, which are designed to be user friendly.

If you’re a business owner and you have or would like to have a website built in Wix, Alethea is a brilliant website designer who specializes in Wix. You should call her.

And if you’re a Wix website owner and you want to be moving up through the rankings and getting your website to generate leads for your business, I would love to help.
